Burroughs Mountain, Mt. Rainier National Park

For teens who joined us on the trail for backpacking in 2018 and 2019, come hike the majestic Burroughs Mountain loop. This 5 mile loop trail offers breathtaking views of alpine tundra in what has been described as “a hike between earth and heaven.”

What to wear and bring?

The weather on the mountain at 6400 feet can change quickly. Layers of clothing are key. You will want a warm base layer (warm t-shirt and maybe tights under shorts or pants), an extra fleece or puffy, warm hat, and rainproof jacket/pants. Wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots, as the trail is rocky and can be slick. Remember: cotton is rotten because if you get wet, you will get cold and stay wet. The weather varies, although we expect cooler temperatures in late September, so please bring plenty of layers. Please bring two quarts of water, extra layers, and a lunch in a daypack. We have a few small daypacks we can loan out. Hiking poles are great if you need a little support.
